Tackling Antisocial behaviour

Patrols and engagement

The Northern Territory Government funds a range of patrolling services across the Territory, which are a key part of the anti-social behaviour package.

Community patrolling services are provided in conjunction with non-government organisations in Darwin, Alice Springs, Katherine and Tennant Creek. Some of these patrols are funded by the Australian Government.

The patrols are designed to prevent harm and maintain community peace, security and safety. This can include taking intoxicated people out of public places and into sobering-up shelters and other safe places and referring them to a range of rehabilitation services.

First Response Patrol
The First Response Patrol is a daytime patrol that operates seven days a week patrolling anti-social behaviour hotspots around Darwin and Palmerston.

The role of First Response Patrol is to intervene early to cut down the causes of anti-social behaviour. It also gathers intelligence for police, provides first-level problem resolution and refers people to services such as Return to Country, sobering-up shelters, rehabilitation programs and short-term accommodation.

Attached to First Response Patrol is a dedicated report-in line for Darwin and Palmerston residents to report instances of anti-social behaviour. The number is 1800 272 111.

Darwin Area Night Patrol
The Darwin Area Night Patrol is operated by Larrakia Nation servicing Darwin and Palmerston seven days a week. Night Patrol officers are trained to deal with intoxicated people.

The Darwin Area Night Patrol complements other Larrakia Nation patrols and services delivered during daytime hours.

Transit Officers
Transit Officers are now working on the Darwin and Palmerston bus network. The officers provide a highly visible security presence and conduct patrol duties on school and public bus networks and at interchanges to detect any suspicious articles, activities or persons. Their key objective is to allow the travelling public to carry out their activities without disruption and to provide bus drivers with a safe and secure work environment. Staff work on a roster system in teams of at least two officers.

Transit Officers identify and deal with unlawful activity in and around public transport facilities by way of infringement, caution, summons or arrest, depending on the circumstances of each situation. The officers work closely with NT Police in the execution of their duties.
